I really enjoyed Boss and Brat. What stayed with me most was the tremendous empathy I felt for Ethan. Yes, he’s a hot mess. He makes mistakes, acts before he thinks, and has a remarkable talent for getting himself into trouble. But Brina Brady writes him with such understanding that it’s impossible to see him simply as the screwup everyone seems to think he is. Underneath all that chaos is a young man who has spent far too long expecting to be blamed, punished, or found wanting.
And then there’s Carter.
I loved the way their relationship develops. Carter is disciplined, controlled, and determined to keep his emotional distance, but he also sees Ethan. He sees the defeated young man trying to make himself smaller, and instead of adding to the judgment Ethan has lived with, Carter gives him structure, patience, trust, and eventually a place where he feels safe.
That’s where Brina’s writing really worked for me. She allows the relationship to grow slowly and naturally, with a warmth that runs through the entire story. The romance isn’t simply about attraction; it’s about being seen and accepted. It’s about Ethan discovering that becoming a man doesn’t mean becoming somebody else. He can make mistakes, learn, grow, and still be worthy of love.
There are difficult family dynamics and painful moments along the way, but the story never lost that underlying sense of warmth and hope. Watching Ethan gradually find confidence, safety, and a home with Carter was enormously satisfying.
Brina writes these two men with tenderness, humor, and genuine affection, and by the end I wasn’t just happy that Ethan and Carter had found each other. I was happy for Ethan—because at last, he had found someone who believed in him and gave him room to believe in himself.
A warm, heartfelt romance and a thoroughly satisfying read.
